om1

People travel all over to get a taste of the Glasgow West End experience. One of Glasgow’s attractions in particular has forged it’s way through the noise and has established itself as a “must do” attraction in Glasgow.

Òran Mór is a thriving arts & entertainment venue located right at the top of Byres road in Glasgow’s west end. It boasts a Victorian Bar and Whisky Bar, John Muir Room Restaurant and Brasserie Restaurant, Private Dining Room, Live Music venue, Night Club, and a Auditorium.

THE HISTORY OF A POPULAR GLASGOW VENUE

Back in 1857, “A Short Life of Burns” writer and publisher John Blackie Snr had pre-empt Glasgow’s West End to have a major residential development growth and realised that these residents would require a place of religious worship.

On the 4th September 1857, John Blackie Snr laid the foundation stone and the work of building the church began. Kelvinside Parish Church was finally completed in 1862.

Fast forward to the present, the church now goes by the now more familiar name of Òran Mór which is well suited as Òran Mór is Gaelic for ‘great melody of life’ or ‘big song’ and this is what this venue does best.

The venue offers all year round eclectic entertainment calendar. Whether you are looking live music, comedy, clubbing or theatre the venue ticks all these boxes.

Òran Mór plays an active role in The Glasgow International Comedy Festival by hosting a number of shows as well as having their own comedy shows over the Christmas period which have included sold out shows with the likes of Elaine C Smith, Karen Dunbar and Jonathan Watson.

GLASGOW THEATRES

Where Òran Mór comes into their own is when it comes to the “big stage”. Not only do they offer regular evening entertainment which have included productions from the National Theatre of Scotland but they also offer what they claim “the UK’s most successful lunchtime theatre programme” – A Play, A Pie and A Pint.

A Play, A Pie and A Pint began back in 2004 which currently commissions and produce 38 new plays a year. Regular lunchtime attendees looking for a drama fix and socialise with friends on their lunch breaks have proven to be very popular and a true success story.
